Top 5 Computer Repair Tips

1. Restart your computer

Even if you were to call your internet provider… this would be the first place they would start!  Many problems can go away just by pressing the power button. Always try this one FIRST!

2. Make sure your computer is on

If you are having an issue with a black screen, or mouse and keyboard aren’t working, make sure you are plugged in.  If you are plugged in, try plugging something else into a nearby electrical socket to make sure you aren’t experiencing a blown circuit.

3. Check your Connections

All Desktop computers have many wires. Experiencing a sound problem? It’s easy to pull a wire too hard and unplug your speakers.  Then when you go to plug them back in, you might put it in the wrong jack. If you can see the back of your computer, make sure you plug the speakers into the jack that has a half circle with an arrow pointing out of it. (Means Audio OUT!)

4. Backup your data if you can

External hard drives can be a life saver.  Backing up your “My Documents” will get anything on your desktop, music, pictures, and favorites.  Unless you have documents saved in other locations.  Microsoft has a backup program that is very easy to use.

5. Check around

Do your homework on what a repair shop will charge you ahead of time.  See if they will be upfront with you about cost and the time it will take to repair your computer.  Do they give free estimates, or charge you just to take a look at it?
